Careless smoking and disposal of cigarettes can affect everyone in an apartment complex. One out of four fatal victims of smoking-material fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire (NFPA). If you smoke, follow these tips for proper disposal. If you do not smoke, stay vigilant.

Tips for proper disposal: 

1. Use a deep, sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn. 

2. Do NOT discard cigarettes in mulch, potted plants, landscaping or other things that could ignite easily. 

3. Before you throw away butts and ashes, make sure they are out. Dousing in water or sand is the best way. 

4. Do not flick cigarettes off a balcony
